Bio

Medicine and art converge in a single visual philosophy. The sections below separate the biography into readable parts while preserving the same editorial tone.

Artistic Formation

His artistic journey began at the age of thirteen and extends across more than four decades of continuous artistic practice, independent study, experimentation, and creative research. A self-taught contemporary artist, he pursued extensive investigation into Abstract Expressionism, Figurative Expressionism, Neo-Expressionism, Color Theory, Iconography, portraiture, human figure studies, and mixed-media techniques.

During his years at the American College of Thessaloniki (Anatolia College), his artistic inclination received significant encouragement, leading to recommendation letters for Fine Arts studies in New York and Paris. He consciously chose an independent artistic path, developing his visual language outside formal academic art institutions through personal study, observation, studio practice, and long-term artistic research.

Medicine & Human Presence

Alongside his artistic development, he pursued a demanding scientific, academic, and surgical career. His academic and research background contributed to a distinctive analytical, interdisciplinary, and human-centered perspective that continues to influence both his scientific and artistic work.

Decades of direct contact with patients exposed him to fundamental dimensions of human existence: fear, hope, intimacy, silence, vulnerability, desire, courage, suffering, resilience, recovery, and transformation.

These experiences do not appear in his paintings as literal narratives or medical illustrations. Instead, they are transformed into atmosphere, emotional density, psychological tension, material presence, gesture, and visual energy. The canvas becomes a space where visible form and invisible experience coexist.

Emotional Realism Expressionism

At the center of his artistic philosophy lies the conviction that human existence cannot be understood through appearance alone. Beneath every face lies memory. Beneath every gesture lies emotion. Beneath every visible form lies an inner reality that continuously shapes identity, perception, and experience.

This conviction eventually led to the development of Emotional Realism Expressionism (ERE), a personal artistic framework that emerged through years of practical experimentation, observation, and theoretical reflection. ERE proposes that Realism, Emotion, and Expressionism should not be understood as separate artistic categories but as interconnected forces operating simultaneously within a single visual structure.

Within ERE, Realism preserves recognizable human presence. Emotion provides psychological truth and existential depth. Expressionism transforms experience into visual energy and expressive force. Together, these elements create a dynamic visual organism through which the image becomes both representation and revelation.

The Human Figure

The human figure occupies a central role throughout his work. Faces emerge and dissolve. Forms appear and transform. Presence and absence coexist. Through layered surfaces, gestural interventions, textured materials, and expressive marks, his paintings investigate universal human experiences including love, desire, intimacy, passion, vulnerability, connection, memory, loss, resilience, inner conflict, silence, mortality, and existential search.

His artistic research extends across modern European and American art movements, with particular interest in Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Expressionism, Figurative Expressionism, and contemporary emotional painting. These influences are not imitated but absorbed into a personal visual language that seeks to balance recognizable reality with emotional intensity and expressive freedom.

Research, Presentation & Contribution

The development of ERE represents the culmination of decades of artistic inquiry into the relationship between human presence, emotional truth, and expressive transformation. Through this framework, Thanos seeks to create works that do not merely depict reality, but reveal the lived experience beneath it.

His works have been presented through exhibition environments, gallery-related presentations, private collector viewings, cultural initiatives, healthcare settings, philanthropic activities, and international online presentation platforms. Selected works are held in private collections and cultural environments. He has also contributed works to hospitals, charitable causes, and foundation-related initiatives.

Today, Petros Thanos continues to expand both the artistic and theoretical foundations of Emotional Realism Expressionism (ERE), developing a growing body of work dedicated to the exploration of human presence, emotional truth, and expressive transformation.

Painting is the experience of existence itself.

For Petros Thanos, painting is not merely the representation of existence.

It is the experience of existence itself.

“I am and will always be painting.”
